The chord diagrams show where to put your fingers (Its basically a picture of the neck right near the headstock, if it was point straight up).
The numbers indicate fingers to use (don't use the thumb: it should stay either on top of the neck or on the back of the neck. Never under the neck). 1=index, 2=middle, 3=Ring 4=pinkie
Arch your fretting hand fingers so only the tips of your fingers are pressing down on the strings.
Press gently but firmly. Use your thumb for leverage.
There are many, many more, but you will find that once your fingers learn how to fret notes, more chords come easily and quickly. The first steps are always the hardest.
Go slow. Don't try and play a song or even music, just practice switching from one chord to the other. It is all muscle memory in the beginning, and the only way your muscles remember is through repetition.
